Yip Yew Chong depicted a lion dance custume maker, upstairs woman buying from a downstairs mama shop (Mama in Tamil means Uncle or Elder, as these provision shops were traditionally run and owned by Indian uncles.) via a stringed basket, two samsui women sitting and a mask street vendor in this mural.

Once on South Bridge Rd, observe the heritage buildings in front of you and turn right on South Bridge Rd and continue walking to Tong Ren Tang at 209 South Bridge Rd.

121) Thian Hock Keng temple

Early Chinese immigrants visited Thian Hock Keng temple to give thanks to Mazu (Goddess of the Seas) for their safe voyage. It is one of the oldest and most important Hokkien temples in Singapore. The temple was built in 1840. It’s history are recorded on stone steles inside the Entrance Hall.

In 1907, the Chinese Qing Dynasty Emperor Guang Xu even presented a plaque inscribed with the words Bo Jing Nan Ming (Gentle Waves over the South Seas).
