36) Original Bird Corner at Hotel Nostalgia Urban Boutique Hotel

Hotel Nostalgia Urban Boutique Hotel has a Bird Cage and Birds mural on its side to remind people that previously, one of the two heritage shophouses it occupies, was a popular pet bird shop displaying hanging bird cages with colourful songbirds that drew many tourists and curious onlookers to it. This was the original historical Bird Corner.

Across the road, at the side of the Link Hotel, at the intersection of Tiong Bahru Road and Seng Poh Road is another historical Bird Corner that was set up in the early 1980s by Wah Heng, the owner of a traditional coffee shop.

Having seen how the Pet Bird Shop across the Tiong Bahru Road attracted heaps of people with its colourful songbirds chirping beautiful melodies, he set up a metal structure for pet bird owners to hang their bird cages outside his coffee shop. The Coffee Shop Bird Corner attracted heaps of bird owners that came to showoff their pet birds in bird cages that they hung at the Bird Corner, the birds owners and other coffee shop customers enjoyed the birds singing, enjoyed socializing and of course enjoyed food and drinks purchased from the coffee shop.

Bird singing competitions were held at the Coffee Shop Bird Corner, including one sponsored by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Herbie Mann, the popular American jazz flutist also visited the corner in 1984 and performed to the accompaniment of bird songs.

This is the end of the Tiong Bahru tour. At Seng Poh Rd and Tiong Bahru Road, you have a choice of three MRT Stations:

MRT (EW16 NE3 TE17) Outram Park Station Exit 8 is the recommended MRT Station to go to as you have a choice of three lines (The East West Line, the North East Line and the Thomson East Coast Line) to serve you and it is nearer to your free tour destinations. However, if you prefer, you can go to the nearest MRT Station, which is MRT (TE16) Havelock Station Exit 1 on Zion Rd and take the MRT for just one station to MRT (EW16 NE3 TE17) Outram Park Station.
