21) Blk 78 Guan Chuan Street: the builtin Air Raid Shelter

Blk 78 Guan Chuan Street has an Air Raid Shelter that is located at its back. It was built between 1938 and 1941. It was Singapore's first public Air Raid Shelter in a public housing project.

Sarawak-born sculptor Lim Nang Seng designed a 1.2 metre tall sculpture that depicted a girl performing a joyful harvest dance.

While facing Blk 78, with your back to Seng Poh Garden, turn left, walk straight down Guan Chuan Street and turn left into Tiong Poh Rd. Enjoy the bird cages and a park chair with a warning message at Blk 75 Tiong Poh Rd.

Continue walking down Tiong Poh Rd and turn left at Eu Chin Street for the Home mural (Which is at EU Chin St and Tiong Poh Rd).

While facing the mural, turn right, walk to face Blk 81 Tiong Poh Rd and then turn left to walk down Tiong Poh Rd to the Tiong Bahru Monkey God Temple, at 44 Eng Hoon St and Tiong Poh Rd, Singapore 169786.

27) Tiong Bahru Monkey God Temple Exterior

The Tiong Bahru Monkey God Temple: Tiong Bahru Qi Tian Gong (齐天宫), move to this location in 1938. It was founded in 1920 in a small attap hut. It is really worth a visit just to view the statues inside the temple and pray to the Monkey God if you wish.

The Tiong Bahru Monkey God Temple interior is even more interesting than its exterior. Here you can clearly see the many Monkey God statues from big to small ones and also some other gods that have dealings with him.

On Hotel 81 Osaka's right is Outram Rd. Just need to walk to and turn right at Outram Rd. It is a short walk (500m) to MRT EW16 NE3 TE17 Outram Park Exit 7.

Walk to the end of Tiong Poh Rd into Tiong Bahru Rd. On your right and across the road is Link Hotel and D'Hotel.

31) Link Hotel

The hotel was developed by converting two blocks of conserved art deco apartment flats into the hotel.

Link Hotel was the first and only hotel in Singapore to be converted from conserved public housing blocks.

36) Original Bird Corner at Hotel Nostalgia Urban Boutique Hotel

Hotel Nostalgia Urban Boutique Hotel has a Bird Cage and Birds mural on its side to remind people that previously, one of the two heritage shophouses it occupies, was a popular pet bird shop displaying hanging bird cages with colourful songbirds that drew many tourists and curious onlookers to it. This was the original historical Bird Corner.

Across the road, at the side of the Link Hotel, at the intersection of Tiong Bahru Road and Seng Poh Road is another historical Bird Corner that was set up in the early 1980s by Wah Heng, the owner of a traditional coffee shop.

Having seen how the Pet Bird Shop across the Tiong Bahru Road attracted heaps of people with its colourful songbirds chirping beautiful melodies, he set up a metal structure for pet bird owners to hang their bird cages outside his coffee shop. The Coffee Shop Bird Corner attracted heaps of bird owners that came to showoff their pet birds in bird cages that they hung at the Bird Corner, the birds owners and other coffee shop customers enjoyed the birds singing, enjoyed socializing and of course enjoyed food and drinks purchased from the coffee shop.

Bird singing competitions were held at the Coffee Shop Bird Corner, including one sponsored by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Herbie Mann, the popular American jazz flutist also visited the corner in 1984 and performed to the accompaniment of bird songs.

This is the end of the Tiong Bahru tour. At Seng Poh Rd and Tiong Bahru Road, you have a choice of three MRT Stations:

MRT (EW16 NE3 TE17) Outram Park Station Exit 8 is the recommended MRT Station to go to as you have a choice of three lines (The East West Line, the North East Line and the Thomson East Coast Line) to serve you and it is nearer to your free tour destinations. However, if you prefer, you can go to the nearest MRT Station, which is MRT (TE16) Havelock Station Exit 1 on Zion Rd and take the MRT for just one station to MRT (EW16 NE3 TE17) Outram Park Station.
