This article is about Plane Spotting in publicly accessible areas in Singapore.

Changi Airport is consistently ranked the best, or one of the best airports in the world.

It has numerous attractions in the publicly accessible areas and also in the transit areas. You can even book a free tour of Singapore if you are waiting in the transit area for your connecting flight with at least 5.5 to 24 hours to spare. Changi Airport has five terminals to grow with the demand and it has Jewel that offers additional attractions, shopping and dining options.

The five terminals and Jewel are well connected via Skytrains, walkways that are inside or the buildings. The inside and outside walkways are lined with attractions that you can either explore on foot or you can even rent a bicycle to explore the outside walkways and the surrounding East Coast Park and even ride all the way to Marina Bay Sands.

However, if you think the best place to spot planes in Singapore are the Viewing Malls in Changi Airport, then you may be disappointed. They may be the most convenient and most comfortable (if you do not mind a possibly noisy environment). But unfortunately, these Viewing Malls are small and mostly you can only see the planes coming to park at the aerobridges. At night, the lighting at these Viewing Malls is not good for looking out for planes. If this is not bad enough, depending on which Viewing Malls you are in, you may have to look through double glassed windows. First you have to look through the glass of the Viewing Mall and then you have to look through the glass of the Transit Area.

Plane Spotting can be as simple or as complicated as you like. You can just enjoy the sight of planes with your own eyes or take photographs and videos of these planes with just your cell phone or get more complicated with expensive dedicated digital cameras with long zoom lenses and filters.

The main idea is to be able to capture planes with no obstacles. This is rather difficult for such a congested area like Singapore, especially when everywhere your view is almost blocked by buildings or trees. To make it more challenging, there are laws banning you from photographing airports' parameters. You need to challenge yourself to be able to be at the right place at the right time, get as near to the planes as possible, be at the best angle to get the best lighting, without breaking any laws or risking your own or other's safety.

Luckily, there are several places where you can do serious plane spotting in Singapore. Some of these places are at Changi Airport or nearby.

one of the best areas to do some serious plane spotting must be the Changi Airport's South Cross Bridge. It is where planes cross between the eastern and western sides of the airport.

You can walk from Changi Airport Terminal 2's Hub & Spoke towards Terminal 4, or vice versa and the South Cross Bridge will be in between.

Along the way, you will get to enjoy more interesting and amazing dinosaur statues and even dinosaur bones, as it is in another part of the Jurassic Mile that stretches from Terminal 2 to Terminal 4.

This is the only area in Singapore where you can capture planes that are not in the air, without having to look through a plate of glass.

There are two bridges for you to choose from, depending on which direction you prefer the planes to come from.

Please make sure you are not taking photographs or videos in areas where signs are warning you not to take photographs or videos as you may get arrested and get a heavy fine or even imprisonment.

Patience is needed as we do not know when the planes will be crossing. If you are lucky, they come one after another. If not, you will have to patiently bake in the sun unless you hide under the bridge and may miss the planes, or if you go at night but then the lighting may not be good.

Unfortunately, the bridges may hide smaller planes. You can only hope for big planes, in order to fully capture most part of the plane. You also need to find the right spot, without breaking any laws or risking yours or others' safety, to get the best lighting and to be able to capture most part of the plane.

Another area good for plane spotting is at the end of the East Coast Park, where you started seeing the dinosaur cutouts that direct you towards the Jurassic Mile. This is where you can see planes preparing for landing. The Jurassic Mile stretches from the end of the East Coast Park to Changi Airport Terminal 4.

After the plane spotting, do visit the Jurassic Mile, to capture some amazing and beautiful statues of the numerous varieties of dinosaurs awaiting you.

If you are feeling hungry, you can visit Changi Airport Terminal 4 to get some food.

The next good viewing area is also in East Coast Park, at Area G where the National Sailing Club is located.

Yet another good viewing area is not only good for plane spotting but also ship spotting! This is at Changi Point Coastal Walk. Between here to Changi Beach Park, you can find many great spots to spot planes and ships too!

Before that, you can always visit the nearby Changi Village Food Centre to have a hearty meal, get some snacks and some drinks to fortify yourself.

If you came early morning, maybe you can even make a short visit to Pulau Ubin by taking a bumboat from nearby Changi Point Ferry Terminal, as early as 6am.
